Bearing Fruit: Trusting God’s Work Even When We Cannot See It

Scripture: Colossians 1:3-14

Have you ever gone through a season of life when it felt like nothing was changing? You prayed, you trusted God, and you tried to remain faithful, but you couldn't see any evidence that things were getting better.

Sometimes, the most important work God is doing in our lives is the work we cannot yet see.

In our latest message at Idle Hands Ministries, "Bearing Fruit," we explore Colossians 1:3-14 and discover how God's grace continues transforming our lives, producing spiritual fruit that reflects His love and points others toward Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Growth Is a Lifelong Journey

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Colosse, he thanked God for their faith in Jesus Christ, their love for others, and the confident hope they had in God's promises.

But Paul didn't stop there. He continued praying that they would grow in their knowledge of God's will, gain spiritual wisdom, and live lives that honored the Lord.

Why? Because following Jesus Christ isn't simply about a single moment of salvation. It's about a lifetime of transformation.

God continues working in us, shaping our hearts, changing our attitudes, and teaching us to demonstrate His love to the people around us.

And as we grow closer to Him, something beautiful begins to happen. We begin to bear fruit.

The Fruit of the Spirit Comes From God

Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

These qualities aren't always easy to demonstrate, especially when life becomes difficult or people test our patience.

But here's something important to remember: Paul doesn't call these qualities the fruit of our hard work. He calls them the fruit of the Spirit.

We cannot simply force ourselves to become more loving, patient, or forgiving through determination alone. True transformation happens as we continue drawing closer to Jesus Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to change our hearts.

And as God changes us, He begins using us to make a difference in the lives of others.

God Is Working Beneath the Surface

Think about what happens when a seed is planted.

For a time, everything important takes place beneath the surface. Roots begin developing, nutrients are absorbed, and the seed prepares for growth.

To someone walking past the field, it might look like nothing is happening.

But the farmer knows what's been planted.

Our spiritual lives often look the same.

There are seasons of uncertainty, suffering, and waiting when we struggle to see what God is doing. We may wonder whether our prayers are being heard or whether anything will ever change.

But just because we cannot see the fruit doesn't mean God isn't working.

Sometimes, those difficult seasons are the very moments when God is developing the spiritual roots we need for what lies ahead.

And during those seasons, we must ask ourselves an important question:

What are we allowing to nourish our hearts and minds?

Are we spending time in God's Word? Are we bringing our struggles to Him in prayer? Are we surrounding ourselves with people who encourage us in our faith?

Or are we allowing the difficulties of this world to pull us further away from Him?

In John 15:5, Jesus reminds us that He is the vine and we are the branches. Apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Our spiritual growth depends on remaining connected to the One who gives us life.

Bearing Fruit Through Difficult Seasons

One of the most encouraging truths in Colossians 1 is Paul's prayer that believers would be strengthened by God's power, giving them endurance, patience, and joy.

Notice that Paul doesn't simply pray for their difficulties to disappear.

He prays that God would give them the strength to remain faithful through those difficulties.

Sometimes, the greatest evidence of God's work in our lives isn't found in the absence of hardship. It's found in the way we respond to hardship.

When we demonstrate patience in frustration, kindness in conflict, love toward those who have hurt us, and joy during suffering, others begin seeing something different in us.

They begin seeing Jesus Christ.

And that's what bearing fruit is ultimately about.

It's not simply about becoming better people. It's about allowing God to transform our lives so that He can use us to help others come to know Him.
