Narrow Gate
Matthew 7:13–14 (ESV)
"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few."
There is something deeply sobering about these verses. In just two short lines, Jesus offers a stark contrast between two paths. One is wide and easy, leading to destruction. The other is narrow and difficult, leading to life. This teaching reminds us that following Jesus is not about blending in with the crowd or choosing the most convenient path. It is about pursuing truth, obedience, and faithfulness, even when it costs us something.
The wide gate is tempting. It is the path that promises comfort, applause, and approval. It requires little change and often feels familiar. But Jesus warns us that ease and popularity are not the signs of a path that leads to life. Just because many are on that road does not mean it leads to a good destination.
The narrow gate, on the other hand, is different. It often feels lonely. It demands surrender, humility, and trust. It may lead us through trials, criticism, and sacrifice. But this path leads to true life, not just someday in eternity, but starting now in the form of peace, purpose, and relationship with God.
Choosing the narrow gate means choosing Jesus. It means aligning our values with His, even when they are unpopular. It means saying no to things the world celebrates if they pull us away from God. It means taking up our cross and following Him.
Jesus never promised the road would be easy. But He did promise that it would be worth it.
So we are faced with a question: Which gate are we walking through? Are we seeking the easy way, or are we willing to take the narrow road that leads to life?
May we have the courage to choose the harder path. The faithful path. The narrow gate. And may we trust that even when the way is difficult, Jesus walks it with us.
