The Rock
Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV)
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Life is full of storms. Some arrive quietly and catch us off guard. Others give us warning. Either way, one thing is certain. We will face trials. Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with this short but powerful parable because He knows the uncertainty of life. He also offers us the certainty of a foundation that can withstand anything.
In this passage, Jesus gives us two clear paths. Build on the rock or build on the sand.
Building on the Rock
The rock represents more than hearing Jesus' words. It means living them. The wise builder chooses to put truth into action. This kind of foundation takes effort and commitment. But when the storms come, that house stands because it is grounded in something solid and unchanging.
To build on the rock is to trust Jesus. It means forgiving when it's difficult, choosing integrity when no one is looking, and holding onto hope when life feels unstable. It is choosing obedience even when it's not convenient or popular.
Building on the Sand
The sand represents a life built on anything other than God's Word. It might look steady at first, but it lacks depth. Sand shifts under pressure. It can't handle the weight of real life. Jesus makes it clear that the result is not just a fall, but a great fall.
This is what happens when we rely on our own strength, our own wisdom, or the temporary things of this world. When trouble comes, those things are not enough to hold us.
The Storm Comes to Everyone
Notice that both builders experienced the same storm. The wind, the rain, the flood. The difference was not in the weather, but in the foundation. Jesus never said we would be spared from hardship. What He offers is the strength to stand when everything else is shaking.
Ask yourself, where are you building?
Are you rooted in God's Word or are you leaning on things that shift and crumble? Are you putting Jesus' words into practice, or are you just listening without applying?
It is never too late to start building on something better. Jesus is the rock that does not fail, does not move, and does not crack under pressure.
Build your life on Him, and no matter what comes, you will still be standing.
Prayer:
Lord, I want to be a wise builder. Help me to not only hear Your Word but to live it every day. Teach me to trust You more, to follow You more closely, and to stand firm when life gets hard. You are my rock and my refuge. Amen.
